What to Have in Your Shoedrobe

by | 10 Sep 2021

What is a Shoedrobe?

For those of you who haven’t come across this term before, a shoedrobe can be anything from a Carrie Bradshaw style, walk-in cupboard, to a shelf where you keep your shoes!

When I am working with clients in their wardrobe, we often can create amazing outfits, but need to add a couple of pairs of shoes to pull everything together.

This is the key point – you don’t need a pair of shoes for each outfit or a huge number of shoes. But you do need the right ones!

Your lifestyle & personality, plus your scale, proportion, and colouring, will influence both your wardrobe and shoedrobe.

We all know the difference that a great pair of shoes can make to how we feel and project ourselves. Some people have Imelda Marcos tendencies, whereas others can manage with very few pairs.

Not surprisingly, there has been a trend away from high heels as we have been in our Covid comfort zones. Therefore, this season I would expect to see many more low-heeled or flat shoes and boots in the shops. This does not mean that they have to be boring!

According to Notonthehighstreet.com, sales of furry slippers went through the roof last year! Up by 1,290% since March 2020. So stylish comfort will be key for the coming months. Great if you have “problem” feet and struggle to wear heels.

If you are anything like me, you will have spent the summer in flip flops, Birkenstocks, or trainers. I have only worn my strappy sandals once to go out for a meal! I am sure that we will eventually navigate back to heels when we can venture out more often but for now, I would focus on the flatter styles.

The Top 5 Shoes to have in your Shoedrobe

White leather trainer

These come in numerous iterations and are now stylish to wear with pretty much anything – including skirts and dresses. The key thing here is to keep them clean!

And if you have big feet, avoid clumpy styles as they can make your feet look bigger, especially when worn with a skirt.
Look in Jigsaw, Mint Velvet, or try Veja – an eco-friendly brand.

Canvas trainer

Think Superga or Converse styles – both low and high top.

Great for adding some colour or metallic to your footwear.

Just be aware that a contrasting sole can draw attention to your feet and in some instances optically shorten your legs.
Look in Hush for some ideas

Loafer

This classic style never seems to date and offer a great alternative if you need to look a bit smarter.

They can elevate a pair of jeans and look fab with a pair of tailored trousers. Look for loafers in Jigsaw or Massimo Dutti

Boots

And then we come to boots….

I love boots and they my absolute staple during the colder months (and occasionally during the warmer months as well!)

Ankle boots can again be worn with skirts and dresses (something that would have been deemed a style disaster just a few years ago!) And be wary of big colour contrasts, that can shorten your legs.

Therefore, the right pair of ankle boots could work with most items in your wardrobe so take time to experiment and try a few pairs.

The trend currently is for chunky, “hiker” boots, Chelsea boots and wellie boot styles (both long and short).

Slippers

As we continue to spend time working from home this autumn, I would also invest in a great pair of slippers!

I love the White Company range of slipper boots to keep my toes toasty!
